COVID-19 has upturned many aspects of our lives. In this week-long wintersession program put forward by Breakout Princeton, we explored the ways in which the pandemic has affected and uncovered the issues of healthcare and access in the United States-- from racial disparities in access to the inequitable impacts of COVID-19 on different individuals and communities. As a service-oriented program, there were guest speakers, discussions of articles, films and other media, as well as activities that prepared participants to learn and engage more in service opportunities related to healthcare in their own communities.

Since travel is currently restricted, Breakout aims to fulfill this mission by offering immersive online experiences that still allow students to explore issues of relevance, such as social equity and healthcare, in an intimate group setting.

About Breakout Princeton

Breakout Princeton is a university-funded program that gives students the opportunity to spend their spring and fall breaks engaging with domestic social issues through immersion in communities.

All trips are led by students for students and have covered a variety of topics in the past including: transgender healthcare, the education gap, mass incarceration and urban arts. The program is designed to heighten participants’ awareness of critical social issues, enhance their individual growth, and prepare them to meaningfully engage in service throughout their lives. Each week-long trip integrates service, reflection and education focused on multifaceted issues facing communities across the nation. Breakout Princeton trips are offered during fall and spring break every year.
